Let Me Help You Build Your
Practice, One Step At A Time...
From Choosing A Business Model
to Opening Your Doors ...
... Even If You're Starting From Zero
Do you want to start a practice, but don’t know how?
Or ... do you keep running into one roadblock after another getting your practice off the ground?
You knew that starting a practice comes with challenges...
But it turns out that getting started is far more complex than you had imagined.
It’s simple questions like:
- Where do I start? What should I do first?
- How much money do I need?
- Do I need to get a permit or a license?
- What type of office space should I look for?
- Should I accept insurance, cash only, or both?
- What do I do about billing?
- When can I expect to break even?
There are so many questions… and to move forward, you must find the answers.
While it should be simple, it is not.
And it's not your fault ...
School Did Not
Prepare You
Your education gave you first-rate clinical training, but it didn’t teach you anything about business or starting a practice.
Shool provided you with medical knowledge and taught you the clinical skills to become the competent practitioner you are today...
But sadly, school didn’t teach you anything about the “Business of Being a Nurse Practitioner.”
There was no mention of coding, billing, insurance, financing, or managing a practice.
No, that wasn’t part of what you learned in school.
And that’s why starting a practice can be a confusing and overwhelming experience.
And it's the reason why some NPs never get started and others get discouraged and throw in the towel.
But Not You!
You Are Committed!
You are determined to figure it out, no matter how high the odds are stacked against you.
You are determined to get your practice off the ground, no matter what it takes!
Because you are ready to...
- take your future into your own hands
- decide how many patients you will see each day and how much time you will spend with them
- take control of your schedule and decide the days and hours you will work
- experience the freedom of practicing to the full extent of your education and license… and you will not settle for anything less!
But first, you must get past the roadblocks.

I've Been in Your Shoes
I know how you feel because I’ve been in your shoes...
But first, let me introduce myself.
My name is Barbara C. Phillips, APRN, GNP, FNP-BC, FAANP, and like you, I’m a Nurse Practitioner with experience in critical care, primary care, and specialty care.
When I started my first practice almost twenty years ago, I was up against the same problems.
Just like you, I ran into too many roadblocks and was left with too many questions.
But I had to move quickly because I was caught between a “rock and a hard place.”
This is what happened to me…
Before I started my first practice, I took a part-time job in a small clinic. It was a welcome change for me because it freed up my time.
Overnight, my 60-minute one-way commute turned into a 3-minute drive down the hill.
But there was a catch, and it didn’t take long for me to catch on…
The owner of the clinic handed out scripts for narcotics like people hand out candy on Halloween.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, he expected me to do the same!
That’s when I knew I had to get out… if I was to save my license and my reputation.
I considered getting a job until I realized that my reputation might already be tarnished.
And since I had been thinking about starting my own practice for some time, I decided that now was the time.
Please don’t get me wrong…
I don’t advocate starting a practice under adverse circumstances when your back is up against the wall!
But this is how it played out for me.
And once my decision was made, I needed to figure out how to get started, what to do next, and which steps to take.
But it was like hitting my head against a wall. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t find anything.
There was no information for Nurse Practitioners, nothing about starting a practice or how to run one.
Nor could I find anyone to help me or guide me.
Finally, I realized that it was up to me; I had to figure it out on my own.
Like you, I knew nothing about business. Because back then, just like today, business training was not part of what was taught in school.
So, I started looking for answers…
I went online and searched Google. I joined forums and asked questions…
And while I didn’t get the answers to my questions, I had plenty of questions coming my way.
To my surprise, other NPs were facing the same hurdles. They were asking the same questions I was asking.
And so I started to share the answers I found with my fellow NPs.
And this is how it all began: my system for starting a practice.
Mistakes I Made...
Did I make mistakes? You bet, more than my fair share…
Starting out, I didn’t know nor understand…
- how to set my fees
- what to do about billing (a mistake that nearly cost me my practice)
- how to manage my cash flow
- the importance of staying on top of patient responsibility
I gave it my best, but … you just don’t know what you don’t know!
Inadvertently, I made huge mistakes that could have shut down my practice before it ever had a chance to take off.
Today I know that it didn’t have to be this way…
My experience could have been much different had I been able to tap into the guidance of a teacher or a coach.
Or if there had been a program or a course to teach me what I needed to know.
- The entire business building process would have been faster.
- I could have started my practice earlier and
- Worked with my patients sooner...
Not to mention the amount of money, headaches, and sleepless nights I could have saved myself…
But there was nothing back then.
Eventually, though, I learned what I needed to know and opened my first practice.
And, I am proud to say that it all worked out...
Don't Reinvent the Wheel...
Now, I don’t like to reinvent the wheel, nor do I think it’s a smart thing to do.
And that’s why I took my knowledge and experience and put them into a program teaching NPs how to start a practice in less time, with less frustration and headaches.
It took me years to develop the insights and strategies my students have used to get their start in business. And today, many of them run successful practices in various specialties.
Here’s what some of them have said…
Successful Practice
“My wife (Tiffany Cutbirth) started her own NP practice in Texas back in 2015 and her first purchase was your startup package. We attended a few online webinars with you and have been racing ever since. Including Tiffany, we now have 3 NPs, 3 Medical Assistants, and me. Our focus is providing geriatric care in our patient's place of residence, with an average patient age of 85. Your help was instrumental in our success and just wanted to pass along a huge thank you.”

My Way
“I am grateful for that opportunity and giving me the opportunity to do my "thing, my way", and I would do it again. Your course was superb and opened my eyes to so many things. I truly cringe when I see other NPs in the Facebook groups ask start-up questions, I did all of my own research, not taking someone else's word for it, and often times I see experienced!! NP's and clinic owners, giving BAD and incorrect advice.”
RONI ANN TOMARELLI, NP
NORTH CAROLINA
Opened in one of the most restrictive states.
“Your course truly made me believe that it was possible for me to open my own clinic even in one of the most restrictive states. I also enjoy the free meetings you give monthly to engage with all your clients. Thanks for this platform🤗🤗🤗"

Follow the Yellow Brick Road
While your education did not include business skills, it doesn’t mean you can’t start a practice.
The one thing it means, however, is that you must acquire the necessary business education elsewhere.
You CAN start your practice, and it doesn’t have to be confusing, overwhelming, or stressful.
But make no mistake…
You could ignore the lack of business knowledge and keep pushing forward.
But I’m here to tell you it’s in your best interest to stack business know-how on your side, even if its only the basics.
You can choose to be pro-active and educate yourself or wait until "life educates you.”
The choice is yours!
Stack the Odds on Your Side
Why not start your practice with the help of a time-tested, proven system?
It's like stepping on the “yellow brick road” and following it until you reach your destination.
Or…
You can take the narrow, winding road and get there … maybe... someday…
Because there is a series of steps you must take when you start your practice.
Skip just one or more, and you could find yourself in trouble.

But No...
You don’t want to be the NP who ignores a single step, let alone two.
Or the one who makes a grave mistake that could have been avoided, with a bit of know-how...
The one who …
- leaves her job before she understands what it really takes to start a practice
- rents clinic space before she knows if or when she’ll break even
- mortgages his house before he has a solid plan for his practice
- has no idea how to market to find new patients
- overpays for new equipment that could have been purchased used
You want to be the NP who knows beyond the shadow of a doubt…
- the type of practice she wants to start
- the amount of revenue she can expect
- the services he wants to offer to his patients
- how to bring new patients to the practice from day one
- how to manage the billing, follow-up, and cashflow
It’s the type of information you need to know to stack success on your side!
And it’s what I'll share with you in Essentials of Starting a Practice.
