History of NPBO™
In 2006 our founder, Barbara C Phillips started her own primary care nurse practitioner owned practice in the state of WA. While she had been studying business, she knew little about starting and running a medical practice. Reaching out to her colleagues, she found more questions coming her way than answers. Over time, she started sharing what she was learning on her blog at NPBusiness.ORG.
The emails, phone calls and requests for help continue to come. Eventually, she recognized that this too was a business and thus NPBO™, a private community for Nurse Practitioners and other healthcare providers, was born to meet the increasing demand for business education from her colleagues.
Since that time more and more Advanced Practice Clinicians and other healthcare providers have started clinical and non-clinical businesses. And more continue to reach out seeking education, resources and support related to business activities of the healthcare provider.
In addition to the private community, we offer business courses, consultation, coaching, speaking services and more.

About Barbara
Barbara C Phillips is the Founder and CEO of Nurse Practitioner Business Owner (NPBO™) providing business and marketing education, resources and support for entrepreneurial and employed Advanced Practice Clinicians (NPs, APNs and PA-Cs). She believes all clinicians are a “business” and thus even the employed clinician will excel with basic business and marketing education.
A nurse practitioner since 1988 (UW/Seattle), she is ANCC certified both as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner (GNP) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). In 2012 she was named the AANP – WA State NP Advocate of the Year and in 2013 was inducted as a Fellow in the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP).
Over the years, Barbara developed a special interest in business and entrepreneurship. After opening her own practice she received an overwhelming number of requests from NP colleagues asking how they could create a similar successful practice. Since then she has gone on to create a second practice and founded NPBO™.
Barbara has presented at various hospital and university educational activities; national, regional and states conferences and workshops including: The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, The American College of Nurse Practitioners, The Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurse Association, The Nurse Practitioners of Oregon, the Kentucky Coalition of Nurse Practitioners & Nurse Midwives and NPACE on topics related to entrepreneurial opportunities for Advance Practice Clinicians, starting and growing a practice; legal issues for APNs; professional social media use, marketing for professionals, professional reputation, contracts, negotiations, basic business skills for the non-entrepreneur, and other related topics.
Ms Phillips has coached hundreds of Nurse Practitioners and other clinicians on business topics including entrepreneurship. Additionally. she has been published in various professional journals, blogs, textbooks and has been interviewed on various media outlets including ReachMD. She provides monthly webinar presentations for clinicians on various business topics; continues to blog at www.NPBusiness.ORG. Her e-newsletter, ProgressNotes: Business Tips for Entrepreneurial Clinicians, is published twice a month reaches thousands of subscribers.
